City of Wellington wins Grade 4 at the 2024 WHBPB Centre Contest
Saturday 25th February 2024 saw the City of Wellington Pipe Band compete in the annual Wellington & Hawke’s Bay Pipe Band Centre Contest held at the Marist Clubrooms, Pascal Street, Palmerston North.
judges Nigel Foster (piping), Craig Fraser (piping), Scott Giffin (ensemble) & Glenn Miller (drumming) collectively awarded the City of Wellington Pipe Band overall aggregate first place for Grade 4.
Up against Red Hackle Pipe Bands 4A & 4B, Fielding & Districts Pipe Band and Scots College Pipe Band, the City of Wellington’s first-equal placing in Piping and a first place in Ensemble was just enough to pip Red Hackle 4A in the Set event. The City of Wellington then followed with a win in the Medley event which awarded them the Combined Championship for Grade 4, two points clear of close rivals Red Hackle Pipe Band 4A in 2nd place.
The City of Wellington Pipe band also won the Street March event, with first places in Piping and Ensemble, and a first place awarded by judge Innes Jephson for Dress and Drill being enough to secure overall first place by just a single point over Fielding & Districts Pipe Band in 2nd place.
